Assuming that they've worked out the kinks at this point, this should be the most reliable/plug and play traditional controller for games with controller support. I've only used it with a couple of games so someone else will have to provide more details regarding those issues. I think that there are a handful of games that have an issue with the X1 controller specifically for some reason though - not sure if those issues have been resolved yet.

The newer Xbox One controllers can sync via Bluetooth and are native XInput controllers, so you don't need to rely on Steam or 3rd party software for XInput support.

One final note, the first time you sync it to your PC you'll need to calibrate the analogue sticks, but you only need to do it once.

On the upside, it is a very comfortable controller and the battery life is quite good, although not nearly as good as the Wii U Pro Controller.

It has digital trigger buttons which I think are better for most games, but something to keep in mind if you're only looking to get a single controller for your PC.

I'm not a fan of the dpad as I tend to get occasional diagonal inputs when pressing a cardinal direction. If you can't get a game that needs XInput to work right in Steam, then you can try using X360CE to emulate a 360 controller. The same caveat regarding using Steam for XInput support that I mentioned for the DS4 also applies here. For XInput support you can set it up in Steam as a generic XInput controller, but it doesn't support the gyro at the moment. Currently, each time you turn it on to use it you have to remove the controller from your Bluetooth devices and resync it. The Switch Pro Controller can sync via Bluetooth as a DirectInput device. Only other downside is that the battery life on the DS4 is subpar. These programs have a feature called Exclusive Mode which can be used to sovle this, but I think there are some issues with it in some versions of Windows 10. These programs create an emulated 360 controller for XInput support, so it will appear as 2 controllers which can cause an issue in a small number of games as they will try to use the DirectInput controller instead of the emulated 360 controller (the most popular example is probably the Dark Souls series). Most newer games only support XInput, so if you need XInput support and can't get Steam to work with it then you'll need a 3rd party program like DS4Windows or InputMapper to get XInput support. There aren't many games that you're likely to have a problem with getting Steam to work with though.

The PS4 controller is fully supported by Steam including gyro and touchpad support, but if you try to play anything outside of Steam or if it's a non-Steam game that the Steam client can't hook into then you'll be stuck using it as a basic DirectInput controller.

If you're looking for RTS games, there are quite a few. And of course there are other exclusive marketplaces like EA's Origin and Ubisoft's Uplay. For DRM-free games, there's GOG which is a great place to buy old PC games as well as new ones and they can play on the most recent Windows OS. Such places are Green Man Gaming, Humble store, Gamersgate, WinGameStore, Bundlestars, Indiegala are just a few where you can find games for cheap. The great thing about PC is there's a wide variety of sites and marketplaces where you can find an assortment of games, sometimes even cheaper compared to the Steam store. Steam is the biggest as there are some games you can find only in the Steam store. I usually game with a Xbox 360 controller or a Xbox One controller.
